FORTIFIED is a stronger building standard from the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), designed to keep roofs intact through hurricanes and high wind. In Louisiana, building to that standard does two things an ordinary roof can't:
Louisiana requires home insurers to discount the hurricane/wind portion of your premium when your roof meets the FORTIFIED standard — a meaningful cut every year you own the home, in the highest-premium state in the country.
The state's Fortify Homes Program awards grants of up to $10,000 to bring an existing roof up to the FORTIFIED standard. It was just expanded to $80 million for the year. Grants are awarded by lottery, and because we're an approved Fortify Homes contractor, a grant winner can hire us directly — the program pays us for the work. We'll walk you through the process and what your home needs.
A FORTIFIED roof isn't a brand of shingle — it's a tested method of attaching and sealing the whole roof system so it stays on in a storm. When we build one, the work includes:
Once the roof passes, an independent FORTIFIED evaluator issues the official designation — the document your insurer needs to apply the discount.
FORTIFIED work requires a credentialed contractor. Mid South holds the training and certifications most roofers don't — backed by GAF's highest contractor tier.

A third-party FORTIFIED evaluator certifies the roof and issues the official designation.
You give the designation to your insurance company to apply the FORTIFIED discount on the hurricane portion of your premium.
Insurance discounts and grant eligibility are set by the State of Louisiana and individual insurers and can change; figures above reflect current state benchmarks and program funding. Mid South builds roofs to the FORTIFIED™ standard — the official designation is issued by an independent FORTIFIED evaluator, and grant awards are determined by the state. We'll help you understand what applies to your home, but we can't guarantee a specific discount or grant award.
